Northern Michigan’s Small Town Gem

by on August 26, 2015

Nestled at the intersection of the mouth of the Jordan River and the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix in Northern Lower Michigan lies East Jordan.  The town’s claim to fame is being the corporate home of EJ (formerly known as the East Jordan Iron Works).  EJ produces products such as manhole covers and fire hydrants for customers worldwide.

Northern Michigan is Famous for its Outdoor Recreation

East Jordan is more than just a hub for international manufacturing.  The town is a resort destination that is known throughout the Midwest.  As the gateway to the 18,000 acre Jordan River Valley, the town has all of the amenities that an outdoor enthusiast would ever need.  The Jordan River Valley is Michigan’s first river to be designated a wild and scenic river.  Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking and hunting opportunities are available within the boundaries of the valley.

Lake Charlevoix provides other options for those who prefer to spend their time on larger bodies of water.  With two public boat launches in town and a modern marina (complete with fishing dock) recreational opportunities such as sailing, boating, swimming and fishing are favorites for both locals and visitors.

Ice fishing and snowmobiling are favorite wintertime activities for many people in Northern Michigan.  Because of its location on the snowmobile trails, East Jordan has become a snowmobiling mecca during the winter months. The attraction for snowmobilers is often because of the significant amounts of snow the town receives each winter.

The town is home to the historic Jordan Inn, a bed and breakfast style establishment that has been an attraction for many years.  The Jordan Inn is located on Main Street which also is home to various shops, restaurants, bars and a bowling alley.

West of town, on M-66 headed towards the City of Charlevoix, lies one of East Jordan’s best kept secrets.  Historic Elm Pointe is a park that was donated to the City by its former owners. The 11 acre park is home to a pioneer era homestead that has been converted into a museum and art gallery.  With sandy beaches and grassy shaded park space, the park is a coveted spot for weddings, family reunions and other gatherings.

If you are looking for a place to visit while in Northern Lower Michigan, East Jordan is truly a destination, as the town’s website proclaims, “where river, lake and friendly people meet”.
