That Ain’t No Ordinary Hot Dog

by on August 3, 2016

Who would travel an hour for a hot dog? In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, its not uncommon for people to jump in the car, drive 30 to 60 miles to arrive at their destination — Munising, Michigan.

Munising is a beautiful little town right on Lake Superior. Not only is it home to Pictured Rocks National Park and Boat Cruises; Shipwreck Tours; kayaking adventures; waterfalls; beaches and super cute shops, but its also the home of Johnny Dogs and the best hot dog you will ever taste.

The restaurant is the epitome of a hole-in-a-wall. There is enough room to walk in and place your order, then you must immediately relocate to either their outside patio or the neighboring Barge Inn, where you can grab an ice-cold beer. Don’t worry, Johnny Dogs’ runners will find you.

I remember my first visit. It was life-changing. I ordered the Piggie Fries and the Sasquatch Dog. I still dream about that meal. The hand-cut fries are covered with pulled pork drowning in Johnny Dog’s proprietary orange soda barbecue sauce, mustard, sour cream. To say they are delicious is an understatement. The Sasquatch Dog is a freshly-cased dog with chunks of potatoes, sour cream, onions and bacon. It’s a baked potato on top of a hot dog and it will leave you speechless.

WARNING: Johnny Dog Piggie Fries are addictive!

Most recently, my business partner, Vikki and I shared an Elvis Burger which was the best hamburger I ever tasted. It had perfectly cooked bacon with just enough of the orange barbecue sauce and a wonderful, thick onion ring.

But don’t let the name fool you. You’ll also find specials like shrimp and lobster quesadillas made with old bay creme and roasted corn salsa; lamb and fig sausage featuring greek yogurt and feta cheese; and whitefish tacos with lime crème, guacamole, pico and lettuce.

So the next time you’re looking for a great hot dog, or just a great meal, don’t be afraid to jump in the car and drive a few hours. If you think you won’t love it, well DOUBT IT!! You will!
